“One of the greatest gifts that I received from my parents was a Catholic education during my childhood years. I attended Little Flower of Jesus Missionary House, now known as Little Flower Educational Child Care, from 1966 to 1970 (Kindergarten through Second Grade). Although the years were short, the educational skills and faith formation that I developed through the mentoring of the Carmelite Sisters filled me with confidence. My parents immigrated from Mexico and Spanish was the first language spoken at home. I entered Little Flower as a foreign language student – it was a barrier! However, through the love, patience and teachings of the Carmelite Sisters and lay teachers, I grasped the English language. By the end of First Grade I was reading, writing and participating in spelling bee contests – challenging, but joyful experiences and now great memories. I also cherish memories of prayer time, the May crowning of Mother Mary, visits by Santa Claus at Christmas time, sliding down a grassy hill in brown sacks, and most importantly the preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion.
When our son was born, my husband and I planned on giving him the gift of a Catholic education. He attended Little Flower from 1985 to 1988. It was comforting to drop him off at Little Flower and head on to the office. We knew he was in the best care. One day, while at the office, an earthquake hit. I rushed out of the office to pick up my son, expecting to find a frightened child. Instead, I found a calm boy who explained to me what to do in case of an earthquake. Relief! This is the kind of safe, loving and compassionate care that parents desire for their children.
I am most grateful to our Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles for nourishing us not only scholastically, but spiritually. A gift that makes all the difference in one’s life.
